How Does It Work?
There is a short version and there is a long version.
The Short Version:
The short version is this: light therapy delivers safe, concentrated wavelengths of natural light that penetrate your skin and cells. These red and near infrared wavelengths of light stimulate those cells and reduce oxidative stress, so your body is able to make more usable energy to power itself. This increases function, speeds healing, and lowers inflammation & pain, as demonstrated in numerous peer-reviewed studies.
The Long Version:
All living things, from the tiniest, measured in atoms and microns need to make a cellular energy called ATP (adenosine triphosphate). ATP provides energy to our cells and is produced through cellular respiration, the most important, for our purposes is Oxidative Phosphorylation which involves an electron transport chain. Most of this activity takes place in the Mitochondria, the nuclear energy plant of the cell. As electrons move down the chain, energy is released used to push protons out of a matrix, forming a gradient. Protons flow back into the matrix through an enzyme called ATP synthase, which creates ATP.
The enzyme, CCO (cytochrome c oxidase) helps O (oxygen) bind with NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) plus H (Hydrogen) equals NADH that produce the ATP synthase.
So Why Is This Important?
When we injure ourselves or possibly get sick, mitochondria can produce an excess amount of NO (nitric oxide) which competes with O (oxygen) to bind with the CCO and create ATP. If the NO binds with the CCO during the creation of ATP synthase, it will stop the production of ATP which can lead to the death of cells. Not Good.
Red/Infrared Light To The Rescue
On the cellular level, Red/Infrared light causes photodissociation of nitric oxide (NO) from CCO. In a stressed cell, NO produced by mitochondrial NO synthase displaces oxygen from CCO, which results in a downregulation of cellular respiration and a subsequent decrease in the production of energy-storing compounds, such as ATP. By dissociating NO from CCO, Red/Infrared light prevents the displacement of oxygen from CCO and thereby promotes unhindered cellular respiration. This allows O to bind with NADH which restores the normal pathway to produce ATP synthase.
By breaking that bond and restoring the production of ATP, normal cellular metabolism can resume. The benefits are numerous as seen in the aforementioned peer reviewed papers, NIH research and the thousands of published articles

Science Behind the LED

The LED was invented by NASA in the 1960’s for the space program. They needed a high energy, low power source of light. Once a spacecraft left Earth, batteries were the only source of power. Solar power was in its infancy, so the trick was to find a source of light that allowed the existing batteries to last longer. They gave a grant to General Electric to figure out how to get light from a semiconductor. The first use of an LED for medical purposes was an accident…In space if an astronaut cut himself, he would have to wait until he got back to Earth for the cut to heal. They couldn’t heal in outer space. One astronaut had a cut and he noticed that while working on a hydroponic experiment which was lit by LEDs, his cut was healing. That was the first.
The next prominent test was performed on Navy SEALs who were looking for a way to heal aches and pains so they could get back into battle faster. It was found that using certain wavelengths of LEDs, the SEALs were back in good health in less than half the time it took using normal recuperative methods.
To this day, NASA owns all the patents for LEDs, a fact that has inhibited the growth of LEDs in cosmetics, pain management, medical and vision-care LED products. Companies like Forever Young can’t patent the LED, but we can patent what we do with the LED and we can patent the technology that drives them.

Side Effects of Red Light Therapy
Given all the benefits that we’re telling you, you are wise to ask if there are any side effects to red light therapy. What you’ve already read is true – there are no known adverse side effects to red light therapy. That being said, there are some precautions you should consider before you begin your treatments.
Precautions Before Beginning Red Light Therapy
While red light therapy is widely considered to be completely safe, there are a few precautions.
The most common risk associated with this therapy is shining it in your eyes. Not that red or infrared light itself is damaging to your eyes, but the devices can produce high glare. Because you are using the light for non-facial applications, such as wound care or pain relief, just be careful to not to shine the light in your eyes. (The same goes for your pets.) Never look directly into the red-light therapy device.
What are the contra-indications?
Relative contraindications / precautions
Do not use LLLT over any known malignant lesions unless:
for pain relief during the terminal stages of the illness, but only with their physician’s permission.
for cancer therapy side effects (e.g. oral mucositis, radiation dermatitis, etc), but only with their physician’s permission.
We always suggest you seek advice from your physician even though there is no evidence of harm to an unborn baby however there are no safety tests either, so for medical legal reasons we recommend not treating directly over the developing fetus. It may be used on the pregnant woman for the treatment of back pain etc.
There is no evidence of harm and there is some evidence of benefit for treating Hashimoto’s thyroiditis with LLLT.
Very dark skin
Occasionally some people with very dark skin feel an unpleasant amount of heating.
